SUBMARINER Compendium released for consultation and contributions



cover_compendium_303420The SUBMARINER Compendium provides, for the first time, a comprehensive assessment
of the potential for innovative and sustainable uses of Baltic marine resources. The current state of knowledge has been gathered and set against the backdrop of environmental, institutional and regulatory conditions for the following topics:

  • Macroalgae Harvesting & Cultivation
  • Mussel Cultivation
  • Reed Harvesting
  • Large-Scale Microalgae Cultivation
  • Blue Biotechnology
  • Wave Energy
  • Sustainable Fish Aquaculture
  • Combinations with Offshore Wind Parks

The SUBMARINER Compendium serves as the background for the SUBMARINER Roadmap to be published in summer 2013, indicating concrete steps to be taken in the coming years so as to promote beneficial uses.
You are invited to contribute to the ongoing consultation of the Compendium.

Save-the-Date: SUBMARINER FINAL CONFERENCE 5–6 September 2013 IN GDANSK, Poland



The Final Conference of the current SUBMARINER project will be held in Gdańsk, Poland on 5 and 6 September 2013. Please save the date!
Participants of the conference will be high-level policy makers and representatives of companies and research institutions dealing with new marine uses around the Baltic Sea Region. The event will focus on the launch of the SUBMARINER Network and the creation of more actions.
A conference announcement with more details on the conference topics will be published in January 2013.

REview of ÅLAND AQUACULTURE WEEK –
SUBMARINER to Publish Mussel perspectives as a follow-up



pilot_mussel_farm_kumlinge_303148Impressions and presentations from the Åland Aquaculture Week, a joint event of the projects Aquabest and SUBMARINER, can now be found here. The event was held in Mariehamn, Åland on 9–12 October 2012 and opened by Carina Aaltonen, Åland Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Environment and Fredrik Karlström, Åland Minister of Trade and Industry. Discussions focused on ways towards a sustainable development of the Baltic Sea Region‘s future aquaculture. The Åland Government has a pilot mussel farm in the archipelago municipality of Kumlinge which was visited in a field trip (see picture).
As a follow-up publication of the event, SUBMARINER will produce a short magazine assembling the perspectives on the potential of mussel farming in the Baltic Sea Region that were exchanged during the event.

SUBMARINER: The Baltic Sea Region's Contribution to Blue Growth

SUBMARINER presented the main findings from the SUBMARINER Compendium and the plans for establishing a SUBMARINER Network to representatives of DG Mare in a meeting in Brussels, Belgium on 12 December 2012. The recommendations from the Compendium were discussed as the Baltic Sea Region's contribution to the European Commission's Blue Growth Initiative.
