SUBMARINER announces Blue Biotechnology Cooperation Event

blue_biotech_303x148Within the scope of the SUBMARINER project, the Center for Marine Natural Products (KiWiZ) at IFM-GEOMAR and Norgenta North German Life Science Agency GmbH will host the Blue Biotechnology Cooperation Event “New Strategies and Future Perspectives”. It will take place in Kiel, Germany on May 9th and 10th, 2012.

The event will focus on the exploration of the great biodiversity of marine organisms such as algae, invertebrates, bacteria and fungi, which offer a promising potential for scientific research and biotechnological application towards high value products.

Topics of the event will be bioactive compounds, enzymes, and biopolymers from marine organisms usable as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics as well as products for wellness, human care or industrial processes. Advanced scientific approaches, case studies of companies working in this field and strategies for promoting Blue Biotechnology will be presented.

The target groups for this event are scientists, private companies, government representatives and anyone with an interest in the field. The conference intends to be a platform to initiate cooperation projects.

Planned Sessions

1. Session: State-of-the-art and future perspectives of Blue Biotechnology in Europe, the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) and on a national level
This session comprises an overview about scientific and industrial activities in the field of Blue Biotechnology in Europe and in the BSR, but also in specific countries and regions. Environmental aspects, legal regulations and economic impacts will also be discussed in this context.

2. Session: Blue Biotechnology science meets industry
This session will demonstrate the way from marine habitat to biotechnological product. Several sub-sessions will show different applications of marine natural products and raw materials such as cosmetics, nutraceuticals, or pharmaceuticals as well as their use for animal feed or industrial processes. Each sub-session will pay attention to the scientific as well as the industrial points of view. Presentations will also include advanced methods and technologies playing an important role in the exploration of marine resources for biotechnological products.

More detailed announcements will be published here soon.
