SUBMARINER at Conference on Sustainable Biomass Production & Use in the Baltic Sea Region

Copenhagen, Denmark · 20–21 March 2012

European Environment Agency

SUBMARINER has been invited to present itself during a conference on sustainable biomass production and use in the Baltic Sea Region, organised by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the European Environment Agency (EEA).
Several initiatives have been taken to provide overview of the potentials and challenges of sustainable biomass production and use in the Baltic Sea Region. This links closely with the ongoing process of EU criteria for sustainable biomass production. However, most projects have had a national or sectoral approach. In order to tackle the new challenges for a sustainable region, it is necessary to make a cross-sectoral and macro-regional approach to sustainable biomass production and use. Lately this has been expressed by the Commission, who is interested in the Nordic Council of Ministers taking initiative to a horizontal action on sustainable biomass production. This conference will focus on the sustainable production and use of biomass for bioenergy in a cross-sectoral and macro-regional perspective.

Aims of the conference:

  • To present, discuss and investigate challenges and possibilities for sustainable biomass production and use in the Nordic and Baltic Sea region.
  • To attract political attention to sustainable biomass production and use in the Nordic and Baltic Sea region
  • To provide a platform for establishing cross-sectoral cooperation on sustainable biomass production and use
